Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens) EF stands for Electronic Focus and is Canonβs longest established lens mount. It also has the widest compatibility and works with a wide range of Canon cameras. These lenses fit the entire EOS DSLR (Digital SLR) range including: β’ Full-frame sensor DSLRs. β’ APS-C (Crop sensor DSLRs) The EF-M 32mm f/1.4 and EF-M mount Sigma 30mm f/1.4 would provide significantly better image quality than you 50mm STM on any speedbooster. Pretty much any EF mount 35mm lens on a standard adapter would be better too. The 50mm STM is quite soft wide open and the corners get even worse on a speedbooster. Canon Ambassador, documentary filmmaker and 2016 Travel Photographer of the Year winner Joel Santos says adopting the lighter Canon EOS R System with RF lenses has made a big difference to his work. "I had invested a lot of money in EF lenses, and the design of the EF lenses released in the past few years has really been superb. Canon full-frame cameras have used the EF lens mount since 1987. In comparison with that mount, the RF mount's inner diameter is the same at 54 mm. The RF mount's flange focal distance at 20 mm is much shorter than that of the Canon EF and EF-S mounts at 44 mm. The EF-M mount has a flange focal distance of 18 mm. The Crop Factor means that what you see through the viewfinder is more than actually gets captured by the sensor by a ratio of 1:1.6. I understand that the rear of the EF-S lens is closer to the mirror and, therefore the sensor, than the rear of the EF lens, which leads me to think that the image seen through the viewfinder with an EF-S lens is That's what I read before purchasing the EF-S too. For me, it was one or the other when it came time to making the purchase. It was a no-brainer for me to get the adapter from just the sheer abundance and availability of EF/EF-S lenses in the used lens market (not to mention it was the same cost as getting the EF-M lens). The 55-200 STM is noticeably smaller than the EF-S 55-250 STM lens. The EF-S lens is reasonably compact and light, but is an inch longer (4.38β/111.2mm), thicker around, and weighs a third more (375g). To use it on the M3, though, one must also add another inch in length for the EF Adapter along with another 110g of weight. The answer is rather simple, to be honest. Canon made the EF-S lens mount for the lenses that were specifically made for the Canon crop sensor cameras. These lenses were available in a number of focal lengths including some prime lenses as well. The EF-S lens mount is still available in case you want to go ahead and install the lenses.Welcome to reddit's home for discussion of the Canon EF, EF-S, EF-M, and RF Mount interchangeable lens DSLR and Mirrorless cameras, and occasionally their point-and-shoot cousins. What makes the difference is what the sensor can capture from what the lens projects into the camera. For a full explanation see: Equivalence.pdf
